Mooresville Dermatology Center

When we make an appointment with a dermatologist, we are placing our bodies and ourselves in her hands. We trust that we will receive the best care available. At Mooresville Dermatology Center, an office of the Piedmont HealthCare system, Dr. Simon and her staff do just that. The mission of Dr. Naomi Simon’s practice says it all: to provide outstanding quality dermatologic care and health education to patients in a comfortable and peaceful environment. Dr. Simon feels strongly that she and her staff fulfill these goals. They have a professional commitment to patients, something we all desire when we seek medical treatment. They are committed to listening to those who come to them for care; they are committed to earning trust and respect from their patients, peers and the community; they strive to exceed patients’ expectations; they offer a creative, challenging and compassionate professional environment; and they continually work to improve all aspects of the care they offer. Rest assured that your health, wellbeing and appearance are the top priority at Mooresville Dermatology Center.

DERMATOLOGY AND YOU
Dermatologists are physicians dedicated to diagnosing and treating conditions of the skin, hair and nails in patients of all ages. Dermatology has medical, surgical and cosmetic aspects. “Your skin is the largest organ of your body,” Dr. Simon explains. “It’s important for our patients to know how to keep their skin healthy and beautiful, how to prevent sun damage and skin cancer. We want them to learn and practice skin self examination and to feel comfortable calling us if they have any questions or concerns.”

There are two areas of care that Dr. Simon and her team provide. About 80% of their patients come in for traditional medical dermatology that addresses diseases and conditions of the skin. They diagnose and treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, rosacea, cysts, mole removal, fungal infections and diseases of the hair and nails, as well as skin cancer. Screening for skin cancer is a critical procedure that every adult should have. “We can be more successful removing, treating, and curing skin cancers when diagnosed early,” Dr. Simon shared. “With skin cancers we have the advantage of being able to see the growth, so I recommend we do a full skin exam every couple of years if there’s no history and you are using sunscreen regularly, and at least once a year if you have had skin cancer, have many moles or sun damage.”

One of the newer medical procedures offered is photodynamic therapy for the treatment of acne, pre-cancerous lesions, and superficial basal cell cancers. “It’s a great treatment, replacing cream therapy which takes longer and sometimes has side effects,” Kristin Prochaska told me. Kristin is a physician assistant and has over nine years training in medical dermatology, surgery and cosmetics. She sees patients individually, with Dr. Simon available for consultation. “Kristin is fantastic; she really knows what she’s doing,” Dr. Simon said with a smile. “She has a wonderful bedside manner, is great with children, and has an outstanding knowledge of dermatology. I am blessed to have her in the practice.”

COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY
When you enter Mooresville Dermatology Center, you are welcomed by Jean Radford or Jerry Molestina, the front desk team. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, much like a spa reception room. The Center is the perfect place to begin restoring healthy skin and a more youthful look.

Cosmetic dermatology concentrates on skin appearance and skin aging. As we age, our skin becomes drier, thinner and less elastic. After years of sun exposure, perhaps smoking, or due to heredity and skin type, wrinkles, discoloration, and age spots are the result. Cosmetic dermatology offers prevention options and treatment for aging skin. Dr. Simon and Kristin can prescribe antioxidant creams, moisturizers, and sunscreens, as well as recommend procedures such as fillers, laser resurfacing, alpha-hydroxy acids, chemical peels, dermabrasion and plastic surgery. “We have a new laser treatment for red and brown discoloration, sun damage, wrinkles, blood vessels and hair removal,” Dr. Simon told me. “Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm and Radiesse, can restore fullness and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport can soften or eliminate wrinkles in areas like the forehead and the eyes. We can help men and women improve their appearance with many new cosmetics.”

Quality product lines, such as Elta MD for sun protection, cleansing and moisturizing, Neocutis restorative creams, Obagi anti-aging products, and SkinCeuticals antioxidants and moisturizers are available at Mooresville Dermatology Center. “We test all our products ourselves,” Karen Callaway, practice manager, shared. “We have a staff of eight, and it’s very important that our products are the best in quality and effectiveness. We’re a tough testing team!” Dr. Simon’s medical assistants Dana Navey, Jordan Sutton, Delaina Cline and Susan Stevens, triage nurse Martha Johnson, and PA Kristin Prochaska regularly attend seminars and training to learn the scientific aspects of their products. They train to understand not only what conditions can be treated, but also why the products work.

EXPERIENCE, EXCELLENCE AND DEDICATION

Dr. Simon’s educational record is impressive. She obtained her undergraduate degree at the University of Oklahoma, with a bachelor of science in zoology and a minor in classical studies. She graduated Summa Cum Laude, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and was Oklahoma’s winner and national finalist for a Rhodes scholarship. Dr. Simon was named to the Letseizer honor list that recognized the top thirteen women in her graduating class. She obtained her medical doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School and received the Arthur C. Curtis scholarship from the University of Michigan Dermatology department awarded to an outstanding senior. She interned at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and did her dermatology residency in the world-renowned University of Michigan Dermatology Department.

Dr. Simon has presented at national dermatology meetings and given talks to University of Michigan faculty and staff. She has received extensive postgraduate training in melanoma, all types of skin cancers and autoimmune skin diseases and more.

THE PIEDMONT HEALTHCARE FAMILY
After working in other practices, Dr. Simon decided to join Piedmont HealthCare. “I wanted to be part of a larger organization,” she says. “Piedmont HealthCare gives me the autonomy to make my own office decisions. I have the advantage of an excellent referral system to and from other physicians.” Mooresville Dermatology Center opened in June 2010, and sees over 150 patients each week.

Dr. Simon and her husband, Miguel, an aerospace engineer, enjoy the Lake Norman area. Together with their sons, four-year old Elias, a dinosaur enthusiast, and 22-month old Samuel, who likes doing whatever Elias does, they spend a lot of time outdoors–wearing sunscreen, of course! Miguel is Cuban, and they have traveled throughout his native country, touring medical schools, learning about Cuba’s medical system, and visiting family. Dr. Simon is conversationally fluent in Spanish. They are interested in the history of science and medicine, and have visited Leonardo Di Vinci’s home in France’s Loire Valley, with plans to go to the British Museum in London next year.
